[ Inclusions ]
The interactive installation, “Inclusions” was a part of my exhibit “Formations” at the University of Portland’s Buckley Gallery. This project was a response to some information I’d encountered about choices, groups, communications and networking systems.
The space the installation occupied received a large amount of foot traffic due to its open connection to a main entrance to one of the University’s buildings.
For this project, I provided a simple directive with materials for the participant. The materials were: a 4 x 4” ‘ squares of translucent paper with a bold line - either an “L” shape or “T” shape that ran thru the center, an ink pad, hand wipes and map pins. The materials were set up on a pedestal in front of an 16 foot wall plus another 8ft from the corner. To start with, the only thing on the walls were outlines of 3 black squares of different sizes. The directions read: 1. Print on paper provided with your fingertip. 2. Wipe finger off. 3. Attach to wall (outside of black squares) with pins.
My intent was to create an opportunity for anyone passing through the gallery to individually and creatively become a contributor to this evolving piece. Each participants addition to the installation was as individual as their fingerprint.
I was curious to see how this project would develop and what overall form it would take over the course of the exhibit. I wondered how each new addition would influence the next and how much would it change it’s form as it grew. It was up for 3 weeks.
