[ Inclusions / University of Portland ]

The interactive installation, “Inclusions” was a part of my exhibit “Formations” at the University of Portland’s Buckley Gallery. This installation was in response to information I’d heard about choices, groups, communications and networking systems.

The installation occupied a corner of the gallery space which receives a large amount of foot traffic near an entrance to one of the University’s buildings.

My intent was to create an opportunity for anyone passing through the gallery to individually and creatively become a contributor to this evolving installation.

For this project, I provided a simple directive with materials for the participant. The materials were: squares of paper pre-printed with either an “L” or “T” shape, an ink pad and map pins set up on a pedestal in front of a large expanse of wall with 3 black squares of different sizes. The directions read: 1. Print on provided paper with your fingertip. 2. Attach to wall (outside of black squares) with pins.

I was curious to see how this self generating piece would develop and what overall form it would take over the course of the exhibit. Each participants addition to the installation was as individual as their fingerprint. I wondered how each new addition would influence the next and how much would it change it’s form as it grew over 3 weeks.
